I will start with an overview on the phenomenon of extreme magnetoresistance (XMR) which is becoming an intense field of research related to topological semimetals. I will explain the importance of a particular family of materials, lanthanum monopnictides, to unveiling the underlying mechanism of XMR. I will try to give a pedagogical account of transport experiments including quantum oscillations and magneto-transport which allow us to probe the electronic structure of topological metals in detail.
